Taylor Swift thrives one year after Joe Alwyn split
It’s been one year since Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn ended their six-year relationship.
Swift has experienced both personal and professional growth since the April 8, 2023 split.
But a surprise track released on her latest Eras Tour, "You're Losing Me," has apparently offered cryptic hints at the relationship's decline.
Fans are speculating that Swift felt unfulfilled despite efforts to save the romance after Jack Antonoff revealed the song's December 2021 creation date, well before their official split. An insider told Us Weekly that Alwyn found Swift's high-profile celebrity status difficult, echoing fears the singer often expresses in her music.
Swift's focus shifted to her music and tour, cementing her billionaire status. Briefly linked to The 1975's Matty Healy, she ultimately found love with Kansas City Chiefs' Travis Kelce. Unlike Swift's guarded relationship with Alwyn, her romance with Kelce was proudly public. "When you say a relationship is public, that means I'm going to see him do what he loves, we're showing up for each other, other people are there and we don't care," Swift explained in her TIME Person of the Year interview.
Kelce's open admiration starkly contrasts Alwyn's elusive answers about Swift. Swift and Kelce regularly support each other's careers, which culminated in her enthusiastic Super Bowl appearances. This further highlighted differences between the two relationships.
Swift achieved numerous career milestones with Kelce by her side, including her record-breaking MTV VMAs win, box office success for her Eras Tour film, and a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album. In February 2024, she announced her surprise 11th studio album, "The Tortured Poets Department."
"I needed to make it. It was really a lifeline for me," Swift shared during a concert. "It sort of reminded me of why songwriting is something that actually gets me through life and I've never had an album where I've needed songwriting more than I needed it on Tortured Poets."
Fans think TTPD will address the Alwyn breakup. The name echoes Alwyn's "Tortured Man Club" group chat, and track titles like "But Daddy I Love Him" seem to reference him. Swift's exclusive Apple Music playlists, themed around the five stages of grief, further fueled speculation. Notably, her "Denial" playlist includes several Alwyn-inspired songs, even the once-romanticized "Lover."
The Tortured Poets Department drops on April 19, promising a deep dive into the aftermath of lost love.
