Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, former prime minister and a leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), on Monday approached the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the registration of a new political party.

Abbasi arrived at the ECP office in Islamabad today where he submitted an application for the registration of the new political party. Along with the application, he also submitted the required documents.

“We’re registering the party as per the Election Act 2017. We will actively participate under the banner of this party in the next elections,” he concluded.

He further said that the name of the party has not been finalised yet.

Abbasi had frequently alluded to the creation of a new party due to his disagreements with the top leadership of the PML-N, and he had also suggested that a new party would emerge following the nationwide polls on February 8th.

In December last year, the former premier announced that he will not participate in the upcoming general elections.

In August, he took aim at his own government for eroding people’s trust in the system, calling the National Assembly of that time the worst in the country’s history.
