Shocking surge seen in sacrilegious activities on social media

Speakers at seminar say parents, teachers can dissuade youth from blasphemous tendencies

HYDERABAD:

The higher education institutions can be instrumental in creating awareness about digital literacy and responsible online behaviour to curb the rising cases of blasphemy, the speakers observed at an awareness session at Isra University, Hyderabad, on Monday. The event was titled 'Awareness session for prevention of blasphemous materials and activities on social media in connection with Youm-e-Tahaffuz Namoos-e-Risalat (PBUH)'.

Hyderabad district police chief SSP Amjad Ahmed Shaikh in his speech expressed concern over the shocking surge of sacrilegious activities on social media. He cited a report according to which 400,000 social media accounts have been found involved in such activities in Pakistan. "A significant number of these perpetrators are either students or graduates," he underlined.

He suggested that the universities should run an awareness campaign to play their part in combating blasphemy on social media. He reminded the parents and teachers of their responsibilities to instill respect for religions, prophets, holy books and religious figures among youth. He believed that the young generation should be sensitised about the right and wrong aspects of modern technologies.

Prof Dr Hameedullah Kazi, Director Isra Islamic Foundation (IIF), warned against the external forces seeking to destabilise Pakistan through social media. He stressed on the need for a strong state intervention to prevent the misuse of digital platforms.

He highlighted the importance of Islamic values in shaping the nation and said the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is a role model for the Muslims and his Seerah is their strength. He urged the educators, parents and leaders to reinforce the sanctity of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Pakistan and its institutions.

The seminar concluded with a call for collective responsibility and efforts in safeguarding religious sensitivities while promoting responsible social media usage. It underscored the importance of fostering a culture of respect, tolerance and understanding in the digital realm.
