Hrithik Roshan opens up on 'Fighter' criticism, says he's not a good actor
Engaging in a conversation with Anupama Chopra from Film Companion, Hrithik Roshan delved into the intricacies of his recent cinematic venture, Fighter. The discussion likely touched upon various aspects of the film, shedding light on the actor's perspective and the creative nuances involved in bringing the project to life.
When queried about the aftermath of the release, the actor shared, "I've often fantasised about disconnecting completely, because there's nothing more you can do after the film releases. I have toyed with the idea. I'm so fascinated by it - if I could have that strength - just disconnect and not be in that state of deep concern, vacuum. You're hunting - what's the number, what are the reviews, what are people saying? It is going to come to you. The big picture is going to land at some point."
Hrithik also opened up about finding his sense of peace after the release of a project. He said, "When a film does really well, I'm at peace. When it doesn't do well, I'm at peace, because I've already calibrated how much I felt when I saw the first copy to the box office result. And that's always been a match." Opening up about stardom, which he deemed a "gift and responsibility," the star shared, "I would fly as an actor if I didn't have the burden of being a star."
Dissecting his own skills, the actor shared, "When you're doing [Siddharth Anand's] films sometimes, you really have to be a good actor. In this film, I have actually acted. I've had to be a good actor." When Anupama prompted the star by saying that he is a good actor, he responded, "I don't think I'm a good actor. My process makes things very easy for me to embody the character and then just be...I work hard to make it look easy."
The star also responded to criticism about the writing in his latest film. When the host noted that the tonality lacked the effortless and playful quality seen in WAR, Hrithik replied, “Well, I would like to believe that my fans and my audience who come to watch my films are a bit more evolved. And they would not need lines like this. So that's a weight that I bear because as an actor, I don’t cross any lines.”
He furthered on, “At the same time, I admire that Sid is a very very headstrong filmmaker. It's his conviction. And sometimes you see somebody that convinced and it kind of breaks your heart to power down and say no. Which I don't do. But of course, I also bear the weight of that. Because finally, it's my face.” Nevertheless, he expressed immense satisfaction that the film was perceived purely as entertainment and nothing beyond that. “I'm really really relieved about that. Having said that, I still bear the weight,” said Hrithik.
Hrithik was also questioned about his perspective on whether actors should select films based on their star power rather than their acting prowess. In response, the actor expressed that opting for films with a focus on stardom and running a successful business is commendable. He acknowledged that adapting to audience preferences and adjusting one's approach to match what viewers enjoy is acceptable, though he personally doesn't find enjoyment in that approach.
He shared, "If your mission is stardom, and your mission is running that business, and you have that shop that people are liking and you keep selling what they like... That's also okay. I don't enjoy that, I feel suffocated. I think it just comes down to why you're doing what you're doing. Why are you doing movies? What are you getting out of it? Is it for money? Then go ahead. There are no rules and no judgment. You're earning the bread for yourself and your family. You go out and you sell yourself and do what it takes. I respect that."
He added, "But once that need is satisfied... did you still want more? It has got to stop. You have to know what kind of life you want to live and what is the cost of living that life. I always had that desire in me to find depth, because if you are not finding that what are you doing?"
Moreover, he emphasised the importance of understanding the kind of life one desires once basic needs are met and evaluating the associated costs. Hrithik conveyed that he has harboured a persistent desire to discover depth in all his endeavours. He expressed that his ongoing efforts in various projects are geared towards determining whether the actor within him can find satisfaction.
