KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has ordered the deputy commissioner and senior superintendent of police for district east to ensure comprehensive security measures during the operation against illegal constructions in Azam Basti.

A two-judge bench, head by Justice Nadeem Akhtar, issued the orders while hearing a petition concerning the security of the SBCA and KDA teams regarding the impending action against unauthorised constructions in Azam Basti.

The counsel for the KDA informed the bench that previously an order had been issued for the demolition of illegal structures on two separate plots in Azam Basti. However, during the operation, large number of residents gathered and created problems for the authorities. Justice Akhtar raised concerns about the identity of these people and questioned why police had not taken action against them.

The KDA's counsel explained that only one police mobile and three security personnel were provided during the operations. The upcoming general elections have added complexity to the situation, with political parties leveraging these incidents for their campaigns. During enforcement actions, political party workers often mobilise with groups of up to 500 people.
