KARACHI:

A bullet fired to celebrate the New Year killed a child sleeping in her cot at her home in Korangi.

At midnight, the celebratory fire started in Korangi, like the rest of the city. Many people were injured due to stray bullets; one of them was three-year-old Sania, the only child of Muzammil.

She was rushed to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre by her distraught parents in precarious condition.

A bullet traveling from an unidentified direction flew through a window and struck her in the head.

The velocity of the bullet powered by the force of gravity was just enough to penetrate the skull of the child. She succumbed to her injuries on Monday during treatment at the JPMC.

The relatives of the deceased, while talking to the media at JPMC, said that Sania’s mother had left her sleeping in her cot to fetch milk from the kitchen.

When she came back, she was shocked to see Sania bleeding from the head. The girl was first rushed to Korangi No5 Hospital and then to JPMC. They said that the doctors conducted a CT scan, which showed a bullet stuck in the brain. The doctors said that surgery would be conducted only after the girl regained consciousness. Sadly, Sania never woke up.

There were moving scenes when Sania’s body reached her home. A large number of local people and relatives came to console the grief-stricken parents. They demanded the government take practical steps to prevent aerial firing on New Year.
