Nashmia Amir Butt, a courageous woman who confronted breast cancer with unwavering determination, recently shared her remarkable journey as a survivor in a podcast moderated by Aisha Abrar for The Express Tribune.
Her story is a testament to resilience, the importance of early detection, and the need for a robust support system during the challenging journey of battling breast cancer.
Nashmia Amir Butt's life took an unexpected turn when, at the age of 31, she was diagnosed with breast cancer just one week before her scheduled marriage ceremony. In her conversation with Aisha Abrar, she emphasised the significance of a strong support system during the treatment and recovery process.
"I did not disclose it to anyone when I was diagnosed," Nashmia shared, describing the initial shock and apprehension she felt. Many around her advised against sharing the diagnosis, associating breast cancer with shame and misunderstanding. Determined not to be silenced by this misconception, Nashmia decided to be vocal about her journey.

Nashmia stressed that breast cancer is like any other disease and is not a source of shame. "It is not the patient's fault that they have this disease," she emphasized, "and that motivated me to share my journey openly."
The turning point in Nashmia's life came on the day of her 'mayo', a pre-wedding ceremony, when she received the biopsy result confirming her diagnosis. The shock and anxiety of that moment were indescribable. She and her family read the result repeatedly, trying to comprehend the reality they were facing.
Nashmia's diagnosis was at stage two, requiring chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. She revealed how challenging chemotherapy was, not only physically but also mentally. "You are miserable internally. The battle is all in the mind. Your body is suffering, and your willpower is so important," she acknowledged.
Throughout her treatment, Nashmia stressed the pivotal role of a strong support system. She expressed her gratitude for her childhood friends who stood by her and supported her family during this difficult period. Like many patients, Nashmia had to endure isolation during her six-month chemotherapy journey.
In her inspiring message, Nashmia emphasized the significance of early detection, noting that not everyone has to undergo chemotherapy. Early detection provides more treatment options and improves the chances of a full recovery. With teary eyes, she encouraged others not to lose their willpower and reminded them that there is a cure.
