Man held with 30 liquor bottles

A passenger was caught trying to bring in bottles of foreign liquor worth Rs0.8 million

KARACHI:

The Pakistan Customs Jinnah International Airport Collectorate foiled an attempt to smuggle foreign liquor on Wednesday. A passenger, Mohammad Saqib, was caught trying to bring in 30 bottles of foreign liquor worth Rs0.8 million through the green channel.

Four people, including two brothers, were killed by consuming raw liquor in Gulab Laghari village. Police shifted the bodies of 35-year-old Kumbu Jalal Megwar, 32-year-old Raes Mithu Megwar, 45-year-old Fakiru Rupushi Megwar and his brother 40-year old Nagji to the Tando Ghulam Ali basic health centre for legal formalities.

Brewing liquor at homes and shanty factories is a common practice in rural Sindh where it is known as kuchi and kuppi, however, at times the chemical process goes awry due to untrained hands and the concoction becomes a poisonous drink.

Deaths due to raw alcohol has become a daily routine in the poverty-hit area. Haunted by soaring inflation, unemployment, starvation, and disease, people search for knock-out solutions to escape the worries of the world at least for few hours.

Many young people have lost their lives and the series of deaths continue due to drinking raw alcohol.
