LAHORE:

Punjab Caretaker Minister for Primary and Secondary Healthcare, Dr Jamal Nasir, has underscored the critical importance of raising awareness about glaucoma, a condition often referred to as the "silent killer of sight".

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Al-Mustafa Trust in observance of World Sight Day, Dr Nasir shed light on the alarming global prevalence of glaucoma and its devastating impact on vision.

Dr Nasir revealed that more than seven million people worldwide are currently affected by glaucoma, with a staggering one million individuals in Pakistan having lost their sight due to this insidious disease. He also emphasised the connection between glaucoma and prevalent health issues, stressing that controlling diabetes, blood pressure, and air pollution is crucial, as these factors contribute to the disease's development.

The minister provided a glimmer of hope, emphasising that early diagnosis and treatment can effectively control up to 80% of glaucoma cases. He further highlighted the increased risk for individuals with diabetes and high blood pressure to develop glaucoma.

Dr Nasir noted that individuals aged 40 and above and those with weak eyesight are at a higher risk of developing glaucoma.

“Family members should also undergo regular eye check-ups if the disease is present in one individual,” he stressed.
