Curbing smog

‘Work from home’ policy addresses air quality concerns, also aligns with global shift toward flexible work practices

The Punjab government has come up with a unique strategy to mitigate the hazardous air quality that has plagued Lahore. The proposal to institute a weekly holiday coupled with a ‘work from home’ arrangement is a commendable response to the environmental crisis gripping the provincial capital.

As smog continues to cast a pall over Lahore, the government’s contemplation of alternative work arrangements is a recognition of the urgency of the situation. The provincial government’s proactive stance, with a commitment to scrutinising proposed strategies and recommendations, signifies a dedication to combatting the root causes of smog. The air quality index, currently at a promising 55 after recent rainfall, provides a glimmer of hope. However, the emphasis on sustaining this improvement is crucial, and the formulation of a strategic action plan is a step in the right direction. The decision to observe a weekly holiday in Lahore on Wednesdays, if implemented, is a bold move. The city’s Commissioner’s Office has clarified that the extension of the extra holiday will take effect next week, giving stakeholders time to prepare for this innovative intervention. However, amidst these positive strides, it is disconcerting to note the disapproval expressed by certain channels, disseminating inaccurate information about an impending holiday. Clear and accurate communication is imperative to ensure that citizens are well-informed and can make necessary adjustments to their schedules. Lahore’s unfortunate distinction as the city with the worst air in the world in 2022 is a stark reminder of the critical need for immediate and effective measures.

The proposed ‘work from home’ arrangement not only addresses the immediate concerns of air quality but also aligns with a broader global shift toward more sustainable and flexible work practices. This initiative not only aids in reducing vehicular emissions but also sets a precedent for other cities grappling with similar environmental challenges.
