Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested the mastermind behind the murder of Jamaat-e-Islami Surjani Town Councilor Muhammad Habib. Another JI man Syed Adnan was injured in the attack on September 7.

Habib was shot dead during a brawl over the kunda (illegal electricity connections) in Sector 4C of Surjani Town.

The JI councilor had gone for a meeting after he was informed about an illegal electricity connection. He was gunned down while he was returning after holding a meeting with the area people.

SSP west Mahzor Ali told the media that Surjani Town police investigators received a tip-off about the presence of the nominated suspect in Habib's murder case.

Subsequently, a police partly raided the hideout and arrested Imtiaz Joni Mumtaz.

The SSP said that JI Councilor Habib was killed and party official Adnan was injured when they tried to stop power theft in their area on September 7.

A case of the incident under sections of murder, attempt to murder and illegal arms was registered at Surjani police station.

The assailants had fled the scene after the incident. However, Joni was located on Tuesday and promptly arrested, SSP Ali said.
