Internet slams 'coward, hypocrite, opportunist' Shah Rukh Khan for praising Narendra Modi

Actor posted on X lauding the G20 Summit

Shah Rukh Khan has come under fire for a recent post on X (formerly Twitter) in support of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Regarding the recent G20 Summit, the Jawan actor shared, "Congratulations to honourable PM Narendra Modi ji for the success of India’s G20 Presidency and for fostering unity between nations for a better future for the people of the world."

The star continued to state, "It has brought a sense of honour and pride into the hearts of every Indian. Sir, under your leadership, we will prosper not in isolation but in Oneness. One Earth, One Family, One Future."

The post on X has not gone down well with many, especially given the timing. Amidst garnering praise for a thoroughly political statement through Jawan, the actor seemed to have taken one step back with this tweet. "Two minutes of silence for those who were looking for a message for PM Modi in Jawan," joked one X user in response to the post. "It is clear now, in his movie Jawan, SRK wanted [the] public to vote for Modi ji. [The] message is clear," said another. "Liberals and Opposition will cry now," noted one more.

The onslaught of ridicule and taunts did not cease. "In real life, bending backwards to the King," said one X user. “'Sir, under your leadership, we will prosper.' SRK destroyed the whole ecosystem with this one line," said another. One tried to see the silver lining, stating, "For three days, he pleased the leftists and centrists, and now, he has pleased the right wing as well. SRK is a true Indian [for] taking everyone under him."

Muslim Matters, a self-described non-profit "dedicated to the voices of Muslims," took to X to slam the star as well. "Shah Rukh Khan, India’s biggest Muslim movie star, fails to mention Modi’s assault on minority rights and lives, how Muslims and even many Christians are being relegated to second-class citizens in the world’s biggest democracy, how Modi and his BJP party is fueling communal hatred, etc.  Before throwing his co-religionists under the bus, it would behove Shah Rukh to note BJP’s ideological twin, RSS and its inspiration from Hitler. SRK has sold truth away for a small price like other Bollywood stars before him. It’s one thing to remain quiet but another to bolster a hate-monger’s credentials. What a shame!"

One X user stated, "The guy who called himself 'king' in movies really talks like a beggar in front of politicians." Another stated, "Unbelievable! What a coward, hypocrite and opportunist. I feel ashamed of Indian Muslims who pay to watch this coward play a hero...What a waste of money and time. Have some self-respect, people." Yet another X user said, "At this point, I just feel anyone who thinks he's some sort of political saviour is just...very stupid and embarrassing to watch."

Amongst all this, one individual asked for the lens of responsibility to shift towards the government as opposed to the stars functioning within a particular regime. "To people complaining about this tweet. SRK answered it in his film. If you actually ask the question to the government instead of going all woke on one of SRK's tweets then there won't be any need for an Azad or a Vikram or SRK to fight for your rights...Question the government, not SRK."

These perspectives highlight the complexity of stardom amidst a politically rife environment, especially when the biggest star in the country belongs to a minority. Undoubtedly, Shah Rukh's post is a source of disappointment for many, especially those who thought that the actor was sending a message through his latest offering.
