As the election season is coming closer, Google has asked for a disclosure of political ads that have been synthetically altered.

One of the growing concerns amidst the popularity of generative AI is its use in political campaigns. Keeping that in mind, Google's political content policy has been updated which makes it mandatory to disclose if there is use of artificially altered people, voices or other events within the advertisement itself.

Previously, Google had imposed a complete ban on using deepfakes in the ads. The new update now requires disclosure of the use of generative AI as the election season comes closer in the US.

The updated policy will go into effect in November and apply to election ads on Google’s platforms, including YouTube and third-party sites that are part of its ad network.

The policy will also be implemented next year in India, South Africa, the European Union and other regions where Google already has a verification process for election advertisers.
