Rising robberies spark protests in Kunri
Traders and citizens of the small town of Kunri, known for its red hot chillies, came out in numbers to protest against unabated incidents of thefts and armed robberies.
Young vigilantes roamed the streets urging people to roll down their shutters and join the protest in the main square. The town square is dedicated to the services of the USAID in the area and popularly known as American Chowk.
The rural atmosphere of the otherwise quaint taluqa of the Umarkot district in the Tharparkar desert was abuzz with slogans and marches. The protestors said they wee losing their motorcycles, cash and mobile phones to muggers daily.
In view of the worrisome situation, a large number of Araian community, traders and citizens, under the leadership of Humayon Sattar and Asif Araian, came out on the streets in protest and staged a sit-in protest at American Chowk.
Meanwhile, the enraged protesters with sticks erected barriers and suspended the flow of traffic and also closed the shops. Due to which there was a shutter down strike across the city. On this occasion, while talking to the media, various protesters alleged that criminals are active with the connivance of the police. After the four hour long sit-in protest, the traders and citizens ended the protest on the assurance of DSP, Kanri Ghulam Mustafa Kachelo and SHO Kanri, Vijay Kumar Khatri for the immediate arrest of the accused.
