Early sugarcane sowing urged

'September sowing matures earlier, yields higher harvest compared to crops planted in October and November'

FAISALABAD:

Agricultural experts have recommended that farmers commence the cultivation of sugarcane promptly and prioritise it during the current month to achieve a bumper crop.

The Punjab Agriculture (Extension) Department spokesperson highlighted that sugarcane planted in September matures earlier and yields higher harvest compared to crops planted in October and November.

Emphasising the significance of sugar as a vital commodity meeting food demand, the spokesperson noted its attractive market value, which could aid farmers in alleviating financial constraints.

The farmers were encouraged to dedicate more land to sugarcane cultivation and employ modern agricultural technologies for sowing and harvesting, as they contribute to higher per-acre yields.

The growers were advised to select healthy seeds for cultivation to boost production. The spokesperson recommended the use of hybrid and approved sugarcane varieties, known for their resistance to diseases and ability to produce high-quality yields.

He said the approved varieties suitable for cultivation in September had the potential to yield 60,000 to 80,000kg of sugarcane per acre.
