Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan is set to release on September 7 and yesterday marked the kick-off of advance booking for its big opening. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the film has thus far sold tickets worth INR 4 crore just for the first day.

The high-octane action thriller was already predicted to bring in large crowds of people to the cinema and this prediction was proven to be spot-on with every passing hour of the pre-booking. The pre-booking of tickets for the film began at 10 am on Friday and by 3 pm, the sales had swiftly crossed the 1 lakh mark, which amounted to a total of INR 4 crore (4 crore). Jawan’s pre-booked ticket sales kept climbing until they beat the INR 3.39 crore (₹ 3.39 crore) record set by the Salman Khan starrer Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan earlier this year.

The Tamil version of the film simultaneously sold INR 15–20 lakhs (₹ 15–20 lakhs) worth of tickets, likely because of the strong lure of Tamil superstars Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi prompting crowds of Tamil speakers to flock to the cinemas. By 9 pm on day one of the pre-booking, Jawan had sold 1,24,000 tickets across the three bigbest multiplex chains in India.

Earlier this year, King Khan’s film Pathaan raked in a whopping INR 32 crore (₹ 32 crore) in total pre-booking ticket sales. With Jawan still having four days to go before the advance booking phase concludes, ticket sales are likely to continue climbing until they finally peak. However, it remains to be seen if that peak will be higher than the one scaled by Pathaan.

Directed by Atlee Kumar and produced by SRK’s wife Gauri Khan as part of her production house Red Chillies Entertainment, Jawan has been described as an action-packed film that will include large, thrilling action sequences. A total of seven different action directors from around the world were brought on for managing the perfect orchestration of the film’s stunts and action scenes. The film revolves around SRK’s character who is on a personal mission to seek out the wrong in society and rectify it. From the trailers, it appears as though his character will be one of a morally ambiguous, and sometimes-masked, vigilante.
