In Flames, Zarrar Kahn’s debut feature film, had been making headlines while attracting admiration all around. A horror story based in Pakistan itself, Kahn’s project has been lauded by multiple critics and colleagues.
However, compliments are not the only evidence of the film’s impact. After marking its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May of 2023, Kahn’s directorial debut is now set to premiere at film festivals in Toronto as well as Catalonia. The actor-turned-director took to Instagram to announce the news.
“In Flames movie is going to [the] Toronto International Film Festival for our North American premiere! Full circle moment about 20 years in the making. And next up is the Sitges Festival!" Kahn posted.
Produced by Anam Abbas, executive produced by Shant Joshi, Todd Brown, and Maxine Cottray stars Rameesha Nawal, Bakhtawar Mazhar, Adnan Shah Tipu, and Omair Javaid.
A story of a mother-daughter duo battling the realities of the resurrection of supernatural and real beings, In Flames does not dabble in glamour or even music but rather relies heavily on script and sound to establish its chilling nature. Proof of the increasing impact of Pakistani films, Kahn's project is a testament to the ability of Pakistani cinema to move towards critically acclaimed and internationally recognised work.
Previously, Indian Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap could not stop singing praises of the film. “In Flames is so much more than a moody horror film. It talks about society, pulls out everything, and shows it bare naked. That hits you so hard in the gut," he had said.
