Anurag Kashyap reveals he almost quit due to negativity, had offers to make foreign films

Director shed light on how he has moved past the chatter

Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, known for his distinct storytelling and impactful films, recently shared candid insights in an exclusive interview with News18.

The director discussed his experiences in the Indian film industry, touching upon the negativity that had, at one point, nearly led him to contemplate quitting filmmaking altogether. Kashyap also revealed offers from the South Indian film industry and reflected on his journey from the brink of uncertainty to his current creative endeavours.

Having earned recognition as a prominent figure in the film world, Kashyap unveiled a personal struggle with industry negativity that had a substantial impact on his career trajectory. "The negativity did get to me for some time for one or two years," revealed the celebrated filmmaker. "But I think, I was done with it by 2021. But I was really affected by it for two years."

Kashyap further recounted the crossroads he found himself at, stating, “Everything was affected and I was actually thinking about somewhere else. My friends from the South invited me to make films in Tamil. My friend from Kerala invited me to make films in Malayalam. I also got an invitation to make German and French films. But since I don’t know the languages, how would I be able to make them in the first place?" 

While the period of negativity did take its toll, Kashyap expressed his gratitude for not succumbing to the challenges. “But then I am glad I decided to stay. And now it’s over. Now it doesn’t affect me. I don’t even have the need to justify anything. I just want to keep making films. And I’ve been writing and writing and writing." he shared, indicating his renewed determination and commitment to his craft.

Kashyap's journey is one that tells the tale of the creation of a master filmmaker. He stepped into the film industry with his co-writing role in Ram Gopal Varma's iconic film Satya, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. His filmography boasts a collection of gritty and realistic films that have left a lasting impact on audiences. Works like Black Friday, Dev.D, and Gangs of Wasseypur have solidified his reputation as a director who delves into thought-provoking narratives.
