Lahore police face backlash for arresting, ‘mistreating’ snooker champion
The Lahore police faced severe backlash after the arrest and alleged mistreatment of Ahsan Ramzan, the reigning World and Asian Snooker champion for Pakistan. The incident sparked outrage among sports enthusiasts and citizens, who condemned the authorities for their behavior towards the celebrated athlete.
According to Express News, the incident occurred when police from the Green Line area conducted a raid on Ahsan Ramzan's snooker club, claiming it was operational beyond permitted hours. During the raid, the police took Ahsan into custody while he was deeply engrossed in his practice for an upcoming national championship.
Disturbingly, a picture of Ahsan Ramzan wearing his belt during his detention went viral on social media, suggesting that he was allegedly forced to remove it while in custody. In a video message that added fuel to the fire, Ahsan shared his harrowing experience, accusing the police officials of using offensive language and belittling his sporting achievements. He further revealed that they treated him like a common criminal and forced him to take off his belt, causing him immense humiliation.

Expressing his dismay, Ahsan stated that he never expected such disrespectful treatment, especially after bringing glory to the country and representing Pakistan on international platforms, thereby projecting a positive image of the nation. The incident has shed light on the unchecked power of law enforcement officers, who act with impunity without being held accountable for their actions.
The situation took a turn when Ahsan's friend approached the police station and informed the officials about his plight, leading to his eventual release. Nevertheless, the damage to his reputation and mental well-being had already been done.
In light of the incident, Ahsan Ramzan urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi to initiate a thorough inquiry into the matter and hold the responsible police officers accountable for their actions.
Following a widespread outcry on social media and in the public domain, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Bilal Siddique Kamyana took prompt notice of the incident. He ordered a comprehensive report within the next twenty-four hours and assured the public that any officers found guilty would be subject to appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the law.
