RAWALPINDI:

The Government of Punjab has released around Rs1.3 billion for the Rawalpindi Safe City Project which will be completed in a year, a senior officer privy to the development said on Tuesday.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the officer told The Express Tribune that an indigenously developed software will be used in Punjab’s first Safe City Project while imported fibre cables will be laid to connect the project to Murree.

The officer further said over 1,000 modern HD cameras, included in the project, will be connected to the central control room of the Safe City Authority which will be established in the CP complex office.

In this regard, the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) had identified more than 1000 locations to make the Safe City project a success.

High-definition cameras will be installed at all sensitive installations across the city including crowded markets, mosques, business hubs, major highways, entrances and exits, airports, railway stations, bus stations, district and high courts, important bridges, water bodies, major educational institutions, police stations, central jail, shopping plazas, petrol pumps, banks and other important buildings.

Delving into the details, the officer said all the cameras to be installed under the project will be coded and the Safe City cameras will be in different colours to distinguish them from other cameras.

“The district administration will ensure various arrangements to keep the fibre cable of these cameras underground, in which IESCO, department heads of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, water supply institutions and technical staff will also be taken into confidence,” he explained.

During the completion of the Safe City project, Murree will also be connected to the project for which a separate fibre cable will be laid from the garrison city to the hill resort.

“Infrared and cordless technology will be used as per requirement in the Safe City project.

The recordings from the Safe City cameras will be recorded in three different steps, for which services will also be hired from Google,” he said.

The officer said that the Safe City project will help in security arrangements, crime prevention, law and order situation, sudden calamity, traffic problems and keeping the citizens safe from any suspicious activities.

The Safe City project will also be linked with Lahore-style enforcement of traffic rules to issue e-challans to the traffic violators, he added.
