KARACHI:

The water supply through tankers will remain suspended in Karachi on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. According to the Karachi Water and Sewage Board (KWSB) sources, water tankers have been ‘taken into custody by the police’ to block various roads in Karachi on Ashura. As a result, all government hydrants of the KWSB will remain closed until the 10th of Muharram. Sources said that thousands of citizens in Karachi rely on water tankers for their daily need of water.

The closure of government hydrants has given the tanker mafia an opportunity to earn huge profits, as citizens are forced to buy water through tankers at high rates. In many parts of the city, the supply of water through pipelines has been suspended for many years, leaving tankers as the only source of water in affected areas, as water is supplied through pipelines only once a month. With the official hydrants closed, citizens may be forced to buy expenses water.
