Railways officials from Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan on Monday finalised the route of tri-nation rail link aimed at facilitating regional, transit, and bilateral trade among the participating countries.
The Joint Working Group (JWG) on the project finalised the joint protocol in its meeting at the railways ministry. The joint protocol will be signed at a ceremony in Islamabad on Tuesday (today).
The main objective of the tri-nation project is to construct a rail link, connecting Uzbekistan Railways with the Pakistan Railways via Afghanistan. The link will take the route from Termez to Mazar-e-Sharif, Logar and Kharlachi.
The Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (UAP) railway project – for both passenger and freight services – will not only facilitate regional, transit, and bilateral trade, but will also provide better connectivity to the peoples across the region.
Those present at the JWG were Pakistan Railways Chairman Syed Mazhar Ali Shah. Director General of Afghanistan Railway Authority Bakhtur Rehman Sharaft and the Uzbekistan’s Investment Ministry head Dekhkanov Davron Tulkunovich.
The parties agreed on a road map for technical matters, sources of financing and other important aspects for early implementation of the project. They appreciated the professional work of the three railway experts.
