Balochistan promotes kitchen gardening

Plants, seeds to be distributed among local residents

QUETTA:

Asadullah Baloch, the Balochistan Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives, announced the launch of a kitchen gardening project in the province to tackle imminent food security challenges.

The agriculture department has taken the initiative to distribute plants and seeds among local residents, encouraging them to grow fresh and nutritious vegetables, fruits, and spices (condiments) in their homes.

To create awareness and provide support, the agriculture department has formed various teams to educate the province’s residents on the benefits of kitchen gardening. The minister emphasized that the department offers training sessions to different groups, farmers, and individuals while also distributing seedlings.

The response from local people has been enthusiastic, as they have shown great interest in utilizing their home’s terrace spaces to cultivate vegetables and fruits. The minister also highlighted the introduction of innovative technologies aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity throughout the province.

In addition to promoting kitchen gardening, the agriculture department is focused on floriculture to ensure the availability of flowers to the masses. By producing 10,000 plants in nurseries and offering them at subsidized rates, the department aims to underscore the importance of trees and greenery.

To maximize resource efficiency, the department has introduced a trickle irrigation system, which is known for its effectiveness in delivering water and nutrients to crops grown in nurseries.
