The Capital Development Authority (CDA) collected and distributed offal and remains of around 130,000 animals weighing 2,278 tonnes during the three days of Eidul Azha.
The CDA said that the plan to remove waste and entrails of sacrificial animals was effectively carried out during the three days of Eid. For it, the city was divided into four zones with collection points. Sanitation teams started early in the day, and were provided machinery and vehicles such as tractors, trolleys and compactors, it said.
On the first day of Eid, according to CDA, more than 94,000 animals were sacrificed across the capital. It included roughly 52,000 small animals (goats and sheep), and more than 42,000 large animals (cows, bulls and camels). The weight of the offal and remains of animals collected on the first day of Eid was about 1,676 tonnes.
On the second day, around 31,000 animals were sacrificed. The CDA said it collected offal and remains of 18,000 small animals and more than 13,000 large animals. The collected waste weighed about 542 tonnes.
On day three, the offal of around 2,600 small animals and about 1,400 large animals was collected and later destroyed. It weighed about 60 tonnes. This totalled to around 72,000 small and 58,000 large animals.
More than 97 pits were dug at 45 different places to dispose of the waste. Emergency cells were set up at two different locations in the city for sanitation arrangements. The CDA had distributed bio-degradable plastic bags to residents before Eid. It had also set up a helpline.
Meanwhile, 12,300 tonnes of offal and waste produced in Rawalpindi was also disposed of outside the garrison city.
