Rise in prices sparks concern on Eid

Ahead of Eidul Azha, the prices of green spices, tomatoes, and ginger have witnessed a significant increase, causing concern among consumers.
Reports indicate that tomatoes, which were previously priced at Rs50 per kilogramme in Karachi, are now being sold at Rs70 to 80 per kilo in light of the upcoming festival.

Similarly, the price of ginger has soared, ranging between Rs200 to 220 per kilo, with some vendors are even charging as high as Rs880 per kilo. Garlic prices have also experienced a surge, reaching Rs120 per kg, and in some cases, as much as Rs440 per kg. The cost of coriander and mint has also seen an uptick, with prices ranging from Rs20-30.

The surge in prices is not limited to herbs and spices alone. Raw papaya, a common ingredient used for meat seasoning, has witnessed a steep rise in cost. While it would typically sell for Rs100 to Rs150 per kilo on regular days, it is now being sold for Rs250 per kg.

Additionally, the price of green chillies has surged, with consumers having to pay as much as Rs280 per kg. The cost of lemons, too, has seen a significant hike. Previously sold at Rs60 to Rs70 per kg, lemons are now being priced at Rs100 per kg and can even reach as high as Rs400 per kg.

The increase in prices of spices has left many consumers worried about the impact it will have on their Eid preparations. With families traditionally gathering to enjoy flavourful meals during this festive occasion, the rise in prices may pose a challenge for many households.
