Justice Isa promises reforms on becoming CJ

'Will endeavour to make the system of formation of benches and fixation of cases transparent'

Justice Qazi Faez Isa, the senior puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, has said that on becoming the chief justice later this year, he would endeavour to make the system of formation of benches and fixation of cases transparent.

In a letter to former Multan Bar president Syed Riazul Hassan Gillani, the senior-most judge of the apex court expressed his resolve to bring about other reforms in the judicial system with the cooperation of the bar.

Gilani had written a letter to the Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Isa in which he also referred to a resolution passed by the Multan Bar. The resolution had called for transparency in the appointment of judges and regulating the powers of the chief justice.

In his response to Gilani’s letter, Justice Isa said that the resolution dated August 26, 2021 passed in the All Pakistan Lawyers Convention raised some valid concerns, adding that it also provided valuable suggestions to resolve those concerns.

“I shall endeavour to attend to the said concerns and try to make the system of adjudication of cases, formation of benches and fixation of cases transparent…,” the senior puisne judge of the apex court wrote to Gilani.

“And with the assistance of the Bars [I will] also strive to bring about other reforms when Insha' Allah I am given the opportunity to serve the people of Pakistan as the Chief Justice of Pakistan,” he added.
