Govt to hire entomologists for dengue research

Patrolling staff attendance, remuneration made transparent

LAHORE:

More than 300 entomologists will be recruited during the next fiscal year for research to curb dengue in the province.

Talking to the media after leading an awareness walk in connection with the

World Dengue Day on Thursday, Caretaker Punjab Primary and Secondary Healthcare Minister Dr Jamal Nasir said the sanitary patrol staff, which works to prevent spread of dengue larvae, had been recruited on merit for the first time.

Attendance of the staff will be ensured through biometrics and monthly stipend will be paid through bank account instead of cash payment for ensuring transparency. The caretaker minister said research had shown that unwarranted anti-dengue spraying had resulted in an increase in allergies and damage to household plants. Dr Nasir said malaria and hepatitis were more deadly diseases.

There was a need to raise awareness about the importance of hygiene and taking preventive measures to avoid diseases, he added. He called for educating the people to avoid contimaniated water, unhygienic food, polluted environment, adulterated spices and fake medicines for keeping themselves healthy and safe from diseases.
