RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) has given its approval for the establishment of a gaming zone at the Chandni Chowk underpass on Murree Road – a place popularly known as a camping site for drug addicts and beggars.

According to officials, this initiative aims to cater to the interests of the youth by removing the longstanding shelters of beggars and drug addicts from the area.

During his visit to the Chandni Chowk underpass, PHA Director General Ahmed Hasan Ranjha expressed his dissatisfaction with the presence of beggars and drug addicts beneath the underpass. He sanctioned the creation of gaming zones by clearing all forms of encroachment and illegal parking.

The official said these gaming zones will be developed with the assistance of the private sector.

Various games such as Carrom board, Ludo, and a Billiard table will be installed there. Additionally, a tennis court and a badminton court will be constructed. The area will be equipped with attractive benches for families and youth, engaging swings for children, and a cafeteria offering tea, coffee, samosas, shawarma, chaat, and burgers.

Stalls will also be available for rent.

Beggars from nearby areas have been residing in this location for several years, begging during the day and night along Murree Road.

Moreover, drug addicts could be found consuming drugs here until late at night. Illegal vehicles, motorcycles, and pushcarts have also been occupying the area.

On the other hand, work on the project will commence in July.

Expressing his plans for beautifying Murree Road, the PHA GD mentioned that a project has been developed for the enhancement of the road's outlook. All the pillars of the metro bus flyovers along Murree Road will be beautified under the plan.

“These pillars will feature murals paying tribute to the sacrifices of our great martyrs, representing the culture of the Potohar and Kohsar regions of Punjab.”
