Insufficient infrastructure: Rs169b lost annually in dairy business

Pakistan is the fourth largest milk-producing country in the world but 15 per cent of the milk produced is lost

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan is the fourth largest milk-producing country in the world but 15 per cent of the milk produced is lost due to lack of proper cooling facilities, causing an annual loss of Rs169 billion. An official of the Planning Commission told APP on Monday that the lack of infrastructure, such as cooling facilities at farms and collection points, was the primary cause of wastage. “This problem is being addressed through various development projects,” the official said. He said that livestock and fisheries registered growth rates of 3.7 per cent and 1.9 per cent, respectively, during 2010-11.
