Early shutter down
The government’s decision to close markets and commercial centres at 8pm daily to conserve energy has sparked opposition from traders. Energy reforms and conservation efforts are crucial, given rising global oil prices and the vulnerability of Pakistan’s economy. However, traders argue that the proposed early closure disrupts peak shopping hours, which typically begin at 8pm. While the goal of reducing reliance on imported fuel and saving money is commendable, potential consequences must be carefully considered.
Traders’ opposition is understandable. Meaningful consultations and open dialogue can lead to a balanced compromise, such as adjusting closure timings or implementing alternative energy-saving measures during peak hours. Clear communication is essential for the government. Explaining the risks of rising oil prices and the vulnerability of the economy emphasises the necessity of energy conservation. Transparent communication can help traders and the public understand the challenges and the need for collective action. Including energy reforms in the upcoming budget is also a positive step. Allocating funds for renewable energy projects, reducing power losses and completing solarisation programmes demonstrates the government’s commitment to sustainability. It is crucial to ensure that proposed energy reforms align with stakeholders’ concerns and ground realities. Inclusive decision-making involving experts, industry representatives and the public can lead to well-informed choices and effective implementation of energy-saving measures. The government must also formulate a long-term plan to develop and include sustainable energy alternatives to meet the burgeoning energy demand.
The government’s objective to conserve energy and reduce reliance on imported fuel is commendable. However, balancing energy conservation with economic viability is crucial. Through open dialogue, considering viable alternatives and effective communication, the government can build consensus and create a sustainable path towards energy efficiency in the country.
