KARACHI:

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has moved the Sindh High Court (SHC) against amendments in the Sindh Local Government Act, introduced after the local bodies elections but made effective from December 2021.

The tweak in the law allows appointment of an unelected mayor. Advocate Taimoor Ali Mirza filing the petition on behalf of the JI leader pleaded the court for immediate hearing of the case due to its sensitive nature and common interest associated with the matter.

The SHC granted the plea for immediate hearing and fixed the petition for June 8 (today).

JI Karachi chief Naeemur Rehman told the media outside the court that PPP wants to install its mayor in Karachi in defiance of all democratic norms.
