Not Ranveer-Priyanka, Ranbir-Kareena were first the choice to essay siblings in 'Dil Dhadakne Do'
An absolute fan-favourite, Dil Dhadakne Do won over audiences with its complicated portrayal of love and family life. However, what many may not know is that cousins Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor were originally approached to play the pivotal roles of siblings in Zoya Akhtar's critically acclaimed film. It was due to scheduling conflicts and personal commitments that both actors had to step away from the project, paving the way for Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh to fill their shoes.
During the initial scripting phase in May 2012, Hindustan Times excitedly announced that Kareena and Ranbir had been offered the roles of Ayesha and Kabir Mehra respectively. The report stated that the duo had enthusiastically accepted the parts. The opportunity to work together on-screen was an enticing prospect for the talented cousins, known for their individual successes in the Indian film industry.
Later in December 2012, Times of India reported that Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif had joined the cast to play the love interests of the Kapoor siblings. The star-studded ensemble promised an exciting cinematic experience for audiences. However, in June 2013, Hindustan Times carried the news that Ranveer was to replace Ranbir, who had to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts with his other commitments.
Following her cousin's departure from the project, Kareena reportedly began having second thoughts about her involvement in the film. The prospect of acting alongside her cousin had been a significant draw for her. Eventually, the Heroine star withdrew from the production, stating that she couldn't leave her family for the required three months and describing it as "her loss." India Today reports the star to have stated, "It's my loss because I love Zoya, but couldn't be part of her film. I am dying to work with her."
It was in late June 2013 that Zoya Akhtar turned to Priyanka to take on the challenging role vacated by Kareena. The Fashion star readily accepted the offer. As the film progressed, the star-studded cast continued to grow. Anil Kapoor was confirmed to play the role of the Mehra family patriarch. The possibility of Dimple Kapadia playing his wife was considered but ultimately did not materialise. The talented Shefali Shah eventually stepped into the role.
However, one of the most intriguing details about Dil Dhadakne Do was the surprise casting of Aamir Khan as the voice of the family dog, Pluto. Initially, Javed Akhtar, Zoya's father, provided the voiceover for the lovable pet. However, after Aamir watched the film weeks before its release, he was so captivated by its storytelling that he expressed his desire to be a part of it.
Impressed by the 3 Idiots star's enthusiasm and appreciation for the film, the celebrated writer gladly stepped aside and allowed Aamir to take over the voiceover duties. Conveying his joy in being involved, Indian Express reported Aamir to have stated, "I had loved the film so much that I was just happy to be a part of it... I think it is a great film to be a part of."
Dil Dhadakne Do went on to become a critical and commercial success, captivating audiences with its heartfelt storytelling and stellar performances. The ensemble cast delivered exceptional performances that resonated with viewers, making a great, timeless watch.
