KARACHI:

In a significant move towards enhancing the safety and hygiene of water supply through tankers, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) has implemented a digital system to get safe and clean water through tankers.

Under this new system, citizens can access complete details about the tanker by scanning the QR code affixed to the water tankers.

The digital platform provides information regarding the quantity of water and the scheduled delivery time. KWSB officials urge citizens to procure water exclusively from authorised tankers and avoid using water from illegal hydrants.

The launch of the digital QR system is expected to occur in the coming days. KWSB Hydrants Cell in-charge, Elahi Bakhsh Bhutto, shared in an exclusive interview with The Express Tribune that the digitisation of the tanker supply system aims to enhance convenience and hygiene for citizens.

The new system includes all government hydrant-supplied tankers, each equipped with a QR code to verify their affiliation with the KWSB.

Users will also receive a QR code slip that provides comprehensive information, including the expiry time of the water supply. Bhutto emphasised that this initiative, directed by the KWSB Managing Director, will allow citizens to verify the authenticity of tankers and access necessary information by scanning the QR code. All tankers departing from the seven established government hydrants in Karachi will carry the QR code. The digital system utilising QR code will be operational in the coming days.

Bhutto assured that the KWSB is undertaking measures to ensure the safety of water supply, including the inspection of all tankers and mandatory chlorination supervised by Shahbaz Ahmad, the focal person for Hydrants. Medical experts have confirmed the addition of the required amount of chlorine to the water, ensuring its quality.

He said that tankers would only be dispatched after thorough verification.

He urged citizens to ensure cleaning of their water tanks regularly.
