School transport safety
The recent decision by the Sindh government to launch an operation for the immediate removal of CNG kits and cylinders from school vans, coasters and buses across the province is a commendable step towards ensuring the safety of schoolchildren. This proactive approach highlights the government’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of young students.
While CNG is considered a relatively clean and efficient fuel source, its use in vehicles, particularly in the context of school transport, can present serious safety challenges. CNG cylinders, although designed to withstand high pressure, can still be vulnerable to leaks or ruptures, leading to a potentially catastrophic fire or explosion, especially under extreme temperatures. The installation and maintenance of CNG cylinders require strict adherence to safety standards and protocols. However, in some cases, due to lax regulations or inadequate monitoring, the safety standards may not be adequately followed, which can result in faulty installations, poor maintenance practices, and compromised safety measures, heightening the risk of accidents. The complete removal of CNG kits and cylinders will minimise the chances of dangerous accidents and reduce the severity of any untoward incidents. Apart from this, safety regulations and guidelines must be developed for educational institutions and private transport companies to ensure that transport vehicle are maintained generally as per safety standards. The aim should be to provide a secure transportation environment and ensures the well-being of all students. Simultaneously, parents should also be vigilant and choose transportation services that prioritise safety standards.
While the government’s actions are praiseworthy, it is essential to ensure a smooth transition in implementing these measures. Adequate time and resources should be provided to the affected transport operators to comply with the new regulations. Additionally, the government should establish mechanisms to monitor and inspect school vehicles regularly to prevent any lapses in safety standards.
