Govt mulls giving DNA test primary evidence status

Meeting reviewed the proposed amendments in the CrPC, PPC and important provisions of the Martyrdom Act

KARACHI:

A meeting headed by CM's Adviser on Law Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Tuesday at his office in Sindh Assembly reviewed the proposed amendments in the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and important provisions of the Martyrdom Act.

In the meeting, proposals were made for amendments in the important clauses of CrPC, PPP and the Law of Evidence or the Qanoon-e-Shahdat 1984.

The meeting was informed that the amendments have been proposed with an aim to make it easier for the victims to file cases, to facilitate the processing of police challan, return of the properties involved in the crime to the rightful owners and ensure the attendance of the witnesses in the court.

According to Wahab, the meeting considered the suggestion to give a DNA test the status of primary evidence rather than only corroboratory evidence.

The meeting also took up proposal to legislate for legal auctioning of the properties lying in the Supervision Branch, which were decided to be implemented.
