Actor called out the double-standards of India's ruling party and the 'religion card' it keeps playing

Renowned Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah recently expressed his concern over the rise of hate against the Muslim community, describing it as a cleverly tapped sentiment that has become fashionable in society. In an interview with the Indian Express, Shah spoke about the alarming prevalence of unabashed Islamophobia and the dangerous implications it holds for a diverse nation like India.

Shah, known for his outspoken nature and criticism of the ruling government party, believes that the current mood depicted in films reflects the grim reality of Islamophobia in the country. He stated, "Oh sure, these are worrying times absolutely. The kind of stuff that’s pure, undisguised propaganda is being lapped up, and it’s a reflection of the zeitgeist of the times."

Shah's observations shed light on a troubling trend where even educated individuals have succumbed to the fashionable allure of Muslim hating. The veteran actor pointed out that the ruling party has skilfully tapped into this sentiment, intertwining religion with political agendas. He questioned the introduction of religion into every aspect of society, despite the foundational principles of secularism and democracy that India upholds. "Muslim hating is fashionable these days, even among educated people. It’s what the ruling party has very cleverly tapped into this nerve. We talk about secular this, democracy that, so why are you introducing religion into everything?" he asked.

Shah lamented the inaction of the election commission, which remains a mute spectator as politicians exploit religion to garner votes. He emphasised that if a Muslim leader had solicited votes with the phrase "Allahu Akbar," it would have resulted in utter devastation and public outcry.

Expressing hope for a future free from divisive religious politics, Shah called attention to the "spinelessness" of India's election commission. He also marvelled at the double standards that exist. “I mean how spineless is the election commission of ours? Who doesn’t even dare utter a word. If there had been a Muslim leader who had said, ‘Allah Hu Akbar bol ke button dabao’, sh*t would have hit the fan. But here our Prime Minister goes ahead and says things like this and yet he loses."

The actor hoped that the current government's strategy of leveraging religious sentiments as a political card would eventually lose its efficacy. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that at present, this tactic is meticulously employed by those in power. "I have hope that this will wear off. But it’s definitely, at the moment, at its peak. It’s been a very clever card played by this government, and it has worked. Let’s see how long it continues to work,” he concluded.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time Naseeruddin Shah has criticized the Indian government. Throughout his career, the veteran actor has been known for his bold and candid statements, fearlessly speaking his mind on matters of national importance.
