Rang De Basanti, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 2006 directorial, gained immense critical acclaim and left an indelible mark on the landscape of Indian cinema. This thought-provoking movie entertained audiences and offered a profound reflection on patriotism, youth activism, and the power of collective action.

Rang De Basanti stands out as a uniquely different piece of art due to its innovative storytelling, the blending of genres, and the social and political relevance it continues to hold today. In a recent interview shared by Instant Bollywood, Atul Kulkarni, who played Lakshman Pandey and Ram Prasad Bismil spoke up about the unique nature of the film.

When asked about working on a similar project with Mehra or Aamir Khan, Kulkarni stated, "They happen once in a while. Even if the same team may come together again, may try the same thing, but we may not be able to deliver the same thing. So we have done it, and it is there to be seen, and once in a while, we all enjoy watching it together. That's it."

In an earlier interview with Bollywood Hungama, Kulkarni shed further light on the longevity of the film. "I am not surprised at all that it is still alive in the minds and hearts of the audiences. It is a cult film, one of the classics!" he stated. When asked about the film's content, he said, "Whenever I see young people being guided to the wrong direction, I always maintain that the remedy to it is that they should be taught ‘truthful history’. And once they know what the truth is, then any misguided youth is sure to get back to his/her senses."

Shedding light on Mehra's modus operandi, Kulkarni revealed, "Making a complicated thing easy is his forte. This happened even during the narration. He has a vision and idea and yet, gives a free hand to the actors to interpret it as per their understanding. He’ll stop them only if they are going away from what he has envisioned. Otherwise, within certain limits, he lets the actors to go free."

The film revolves around a group of university students who, while performing in a documentary about India's freedom fighters, find themselves increasingly drawn to their characters' spirit of rebellion. As the story unfolds, the protagonists transition from carefree youngsters to passionate activists, taking up the cause against corruption and political apathy. The movie effectively intertwines past and present, blurring the lines between fiction and reality and creating a powerful narrative that resonates with viewers.

One of the striking aspects of Rang De Basanti is its seamless blending of multiple genres. It effortlessly combines drama, romance, comedy, and even thriller elements, captivating audiences with its engaging storytelling. The film's ability to shift tones and evoke a range of emotions adds depth to its characters and ensures a memorable viewing experience.

Rang De Basanti also tackles various social and political issues prevalent in contemporary India. It offers a scathing critique of corruption, bureaucracy, and the apathy of the older generation, which continues to affect the country's progress. The film delves into themes of youth activism, highlighting the power of dissent and the need for social change. It prompts viewers to question their own roles and responsibilities as citizens and encourages them to actively engage with societal issues.
