HRCP opposes banning political parties

Commission urged political parties to come together and determine priorities in the democratic interests of people

LAHORE:

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed its opposition to any measure made by the state to proscribe legitimate political parties in the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the commission said that while it deplored any violence perpetrated by the state or any other group and the destruction of public and private property, it believed in the fundamental rights of citizens to participate peacefully in the political process and choose their own political representatives, who may belong to the party of their choice.

“Moreover, we are deeply concerned that nonpolitical powers may take advantage of the unfolding situation - including the sudden resignations of PTI leaders - to further their own agendas,” the statement added.

The commission, therefore, urged all political parties to come together and determine their priorities in the democratic interests of ordinary people.
