ISLAMABAD:

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Rules, Regulations and Privileges on Friday could not approve ‘The Contempt of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) Bill 2023’ and decided to convene another meeting next week.

The bill aims at punishing those who would be involved in the contempt of parliament or a committee or breach of privilege of a house or a member.

The standing committee meeting, chaired by MNA Rana Qasim Noon, was held at the Parliament House on Friday.

During the in-camera meeting, the panel examined the Contempt of Parliament Bill, 2023. As the committee could not approve the bill, it decided to call another meeting on it next week.

Chairman Noon said, “All the members agree with the contempt of parliament bill. However, it needs further deliberation. Therefore, the approval of the bill has been postponed.”

He was optimistic that the National Assembly would pass the bill next week.

Meanwhile, the committee expressed displeasure over the non-participation of the housing secretary.

Further, the committee sought a report on the issue of promotions in the APP within 15 days.

Noon had introduced

On Tuesday, Noon had tabled the bill in the National Assembly. However, the government and opposition members, including Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, opposed its immediate approval and asked Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to send it to the Standing Committee on Law and Justice for further deliberations.
