Information Minister Sharjeel Memon has said that the World Press Freedom Day is meant to salute brave journalists who with the power of their pen revealed the truth to the masses.
In a message on World Press Freedom Day 2023, the provincial minister said that free press is an important pillar of democratic societies. "There is no progress and prosperity if there is no room to reveal and bear the truth," he said, adding that the Pakistan People's Party is the only party that struggled and fought for press freedom.
He said that the PPP took steps to strengthen and stabilise journalists and journalists' associations.
He said Sindh government passed the Protection of Journalists and Media Practitioners Bill. Under the bill a Commission for the Protection of Journalists has also been formed.
Sharjeel said that the Sindh government is working to establish the permanent secretariat for the Journalists Protection Commission.
The minister said that a helpline has been established under the Sindh Journalists Protection Commission for immediate assistance to journalists under threats, which will be announced soon.
