KARACHI:

Shopkeepers in Saddar caught a group of juvenile pickpockets and handed them over to police.

The pickpockets had become a headache for businessmen and citizens in the commercial hub of the metropolis.

The juvenile suspects were caught by traders with the help of CCTV footage and some citizens who identified them. The young suspects were handed over to the Preedy police after a public thrashing.

The closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage shows them roaming freely in Saddar has come to light. Young boys can be seen pickpocketing citizens, not letting go any opportunity to rob citizens of their mobile phones and valuables in the busy streets of Saddar.

Pickpocketing is considered a family business in many areas of the province with clans devoted to this crime generation after generation.

This year in March, at the 77th Urs celebrations of popular Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, pickpockets targeted over 3,000 devotees, including journalists, in Sehwan city and on the shrine premises.

More than 40 women from different cities of Sindh and Punjab had their earnings and other gold jewellery snatched within the shrine premises. CCTV footage led to the arrest of over 10 women by police.
