Policewomen allegedly steal Rs2.5m during raid

KARACHI:

Three policewomen were suspended after allegedly stealing Rs2.5 million during a raid in Orangi Town.

The raid, led by the Police Task Force, was conducted on a compound allegedly used for manufacturing carcinogenic tobacco chew gutka-mawa, but controversy arose when family members accused the raiding team of theft.

Malir DSP Abid Fazal Mehr led the raid on a house in Moryia Goth, which was conducted on the night between Friday and Saturday on a tip-off about the illegal Gutka-Mawa manufacturing.

As much as 75 kilograms of prepared cancer-causing chew, 48 kilograms of betel nuts, and other items were seized during the raid. Two suspects, identified as Mohammad Younis, alias Nonya, and Mohammad Hussain, were arrested and booked under various charges.

However, the raid took a dramatic turn when the residents of the raided house reported that Rs2.5 million in cash, along with 900 dirhams and some riyals, had gone missing.

The DSP halted the raiding party on their way back and conducted a search of the officers. During the search, Rs1.6 million in cash was recovered from the bags of two female constables, identified as Erum and Maira Khan.

SSP Malir Kashif Abbasi suspended constables Erum, Maira Khan, and Head Constable Shazia and ordered an inquiry. SP Malir Saeed Rind was appointed as the inquiry officer.

According to SP Rind, investigation will also examine how such a large amount of money was found in the premises of a gutka-mawa manufacturing factory.
