'Tillay wali kheri' is a facet of Mianwali’s culture which is popular all over the world.
Kheri is a traditional shoe produced with silver or golden soles, with Tila and leather being key components. Kheris are known for their quality and do not deteriorate over time.
Whether it is Eid, a wedding or any celebratory occasion, the citizens of Mianwali prefer to wear their traditional shoe.
The shoes are also sent as gifts to friends and relatives not only in Mianwali but also in other countries.
The local grooms' favorite attire for weddings is boski suit and Tillay wali kheri.
The process to make the shoes is arduous, but produces a high-quality product that has earned its reputation.
First, the edges are prepared, which is a a laborious process that tests the skills of artisans. The work of fitting Tilla to the leather is done with great care and precision. The outsole is then fitted and the final stage includes stitching and external decoration.
Former prime minister Imran Khan was the first to wear it under jeans, increasing its demand immensely and making him a brand ambassador among the youth and globally.
The price of Kheri ranges between Rs3,000 and Rs25,000. While customs and traditions have changed around the world, the traditional footwear remains popular among elders, youth and children.
Three different designs of the shoe are produced in Charsadda and other areas.
A shoemaker, said whole speaking to The Express Tribune that the wearers of this type of shoe treat is as a part of their personality.
