Pakistan: failing, failing, failing...
LOS ANGELES:
This is with reference to Aaker Patel’s article “Pakistan: failing, failing, failing…” (June 23). It ought to be remembered that the US and the Soviet Union left Afghanistan after the US sponsored jihad ably executed by Gen Ziaul Haq ended with Soviet Union calling back its troops. Pakistan cashed in on the battle, with the pockets of generals and men such as Ejazul Haq lined well. Gen Zia and his coterie of generals, including our knight in shining armour Gen Akhtar Abdur Rehman, and their brain child, the Afghan Jihad, gave birth to al Qaeda, Taliban and extremists of every hue. The current Afghan war is bound to exacerbate Pakistan’s suffering. And by Pakistan’s suffering, I’m referring to the sufferings of the common man, and not the leaders profiting from the current situation.
