SARGODHA:

The Federal Board of Revenue sent a tax notice for Rs81.3 million to a labourer who ran a tyre repair business. The labourer fainted upon seeing the tax notice and had to be taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

A unique situation arose in the town of Bhagtanwala, 20km from Sargodha when a man named Fazal Shah received a tax notice from the FBR worth over Rs80 million.

Fazal Shah himself did not understand the notice and when the notice, written in English, was read to him by an educated person, Shah was surprised and fainted when he heard the notice. He was shifted to THQ Hospital Bhagtanwala.

According to the doctors, Shah's condition deteriorated due to stress and he was administered medicines and a drip. He has since been discharged from the medical facility.

Shah told The Express Tribune that he set up his puncture repair shop in Bhagtanwala one year ago, where he would repair punctures for Rs70 every day. He added that he neither has a bank account nor does he work for a politician, due to which he claimed to be in possession of a large sum of money.

Officials at the Regional Tax Office were contacted and FBR spokesperson Ali Saleh Kaliar said that Shah submitted his income tax returns and notices were issued regarding the irregularities in them.
