A significant development was made in relation to removing blockade at the tail race tunnel of 969-megawatt Neelum-Jhelum (NJ) Hydropower Project during Eid day with the restoration of 150-foot long tunnel that had earlier collapsed.
Restoration work continued during Eid holidays. Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Engineer Lt Gen (Retd) Sajjad Ghani visited the Neelum-Jhelum project on Monday and witnessed the remedial work and construction activities.
He praised efforts of Wapda’s project team, China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) and project consultants.
He was briefed on the remedial work being carried out for the restoration of power project in light of the report furnished by an international panel of experts.
The hydraulic lining shutter is being installed inside the tail race tunnel for concrete lining while allied work is continuing side by side. A risk analysis report of the consultants is expected to be finalised next month.
Wapda chairman directed project authorities to resume electricity generation from the plant by the end of July.
Construction of the project began in 2008 after a Chinese consortium was awarded contract in July 2007.
After a delay of many years, the first generator was commissioned in April 2018 and the entire project was completed in August 2018 when the fourth and last unit was synchronised with the national grid on August 13.
