Pressures of education
The tragic news of a 15-year-old boy setting himself ablaze due to exam anxiety in Muzaffargarh is a grim reminder of the immense pressure that students face during their academic pursuits. He suffered 70% burns on his body and remains in critical condition in the hospital. This incident highlights the urgent need for the education system to address the mental health and well-being of students.
The circumstances leading to this tragedy are all too familiar to many students in our country, where the education system places undue emphasis on grades and exam scores, often neglecting the emotional needs of students. Mental health crisis among students is a growing concern that cannot be ignored any longer. The prevalence of anxiety, depression and other mental disorders is increasing at an alarming rate, and it is high time that we addressed this issue as a society. It is also important for parents, teachers and educational institutions to recognise the signs of mental distress in students and provide the necessary support and guidance. While parents understandably want their children to succeed academically, it is important to strike a balance between encouraging and supporting them and placing excessive pressure on them. Parents and teachers must remember that early intervention can prevent the escalation of mental health issues and prevent tragic incidents like the one in Muzaffargarh.
The education system must incorporate mental health services, counselling and stress management techniques into the curriculum. We need to create a safe and supportive environment for students to discuss their fears and concerns without judgment or retribution. As a society, we cannot afford to continue overlooking the mental health needs of our young people. Revamping the education system of the country to prioritise mental health is the need of the hour. It is time for officials to act for the sake of our children and our future.
