SC must ‘summon PM, ministers’ over poll delay

Pakistan Peoples Party leader Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan on Tuesday demanded of the Supreme Court to summon Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar and the Election Commission of Pakistan and seek explanation from them over their statements regarding delay in the elections.

Talking to media persons at the Lahore High Court, the PPP leader said, “PM Shehbaz, Sanaullah and Tarar will be responsible if the elections are not conducted within the given timeframe.”

Aitzaz said, “Who are they not to conduct the elections when the Supreme Court is directing to hold elections on May 14.”

The top court should summon them and then punish them under contempt charges if they admit non-compliance with its order, he maintained.

The PM should be asked how his decision could be accepted when he himself did not obey the court’s order, he added.

Aitzaz said those persons who did not obey the Supreme Court’s order should be disqualified for five years.

“Imran was nothing but it is the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) which made him a popular leader among the public through its wrong decisions in general and registration of cases in particular.”

He said, “It is astonishing how the PDM worked out a formula to make Imran Khan undefeatable in elections by constituting more than hundred cases against him.”

He feared that the country would face gigantic problems in the future if things remained unchanged and the conduct of the political parties was confined to the achievement of their vested interests rather than obeying the Constitution.
