WAPDA discusses financing with ADB

Presented Thakot and Pattan as contenders for project readiness financing

KARACHI:

A 5-member delegation of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) called on Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman (Retd) Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani on Monday to discuss development priorities, roadmaps and financing of WAPDA projects.

The delegation was briefed about how WAPDA was implementing a low-cost, clean and green energy generation plan on priority. This was being done in order to minimise the country’s dependence on costly thermal electricity being generated on imported fuel and counter its adverse impact on the environment.

The ADB representatives were also apprised of WAPDA’s asset base, financial streams and innovative strategy to arrange funds for the construction of its projects.

Apart from discussing the WAPDA projects currently under-construction – namely the Diamer Basha Dam and Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project – plans for projects ready for the initiation of construction work – namely Thakot and Pattan – were also presented to the delegation for Project Readiness Financing from the ADB.
