KARACHI:

The Sindh government has decided to launch massive action against vehicles that are not registered, including those for which owners have applied for registration (AFR), that are without original number plates, or are running on open letters.

Sindh Information Minister said the government had given all such vehicle owners one week to get their registration in order after which their vehicles would be seized. He was accompanied by Excise Minister Mukesh Chawla and CM's aide Murtaza Wahab.

Memon said that showroom owners do not have the authority to sell unregistered vehicles. "If such a vehicle is used in a crime, the showroom owner would be responsible."

The announcement of the drive follows the brazen attack on the Karachi police chief's office in which an unregistered vehicle was used.

Display of weapons

Memon said that from February 28, those displaying weapons would be arrested and a complaint registered against them. "There would be no concessions for ministers, advisors, members of assemblies and opposition party members."

Memon said only police, Rangers and other law enforcement personnel would be allowed to display weapons in uniform. No official without uniform would be allowed to display weapons.

He said the same would apply to guards of security companies, who would have to be in uniform in order to bear weapons.

Memon urged citizens to report those carrying weapons and to be vigilant of suspicious activities in their area.

The minister said that vehicles resembling police and security agencies would be confiscated.

He added that these were already in place but now the enforcement would be made strict.

The minister noted that media and welfare workers had gathered at the scene of the incident, including parking vehicles in a manner that created difficulty for law enforcement.

He also urged the media to be responsible with their reporting during such incidents as it might create panic or compromise the operational integrity.
